Produce Spotlight: Sweet Louise Apples

The story of Sweet Louise Apples (click on photo to enlarge)

Hello All and Happy Friday!

This upcoming week’s produce is sure to be a treat. We will be having Sweet Louise Apples from Bunny Laine Fruit in Malott. What’s special about these apples, you ask? There is a great story about how these unique apples came about (see photo on left). They are the only of their kind in the world. We are lucky enough to have them in our box this week! These apples are perfect to grab on the go, and are even better baked and prepared in dishes!

What’s New This Week? There are several other items on this week’s menu to shed light on. Italian Prune Plums from Eastern Washington are for sale this week! Better late then never, but this is a one shot deal, so get them while you can!

Celeriac, also known as Celery root will be available this week. It is a kind of celery grown primarily for it’s bulbous root, rather than the stems and leaves. It is fragrant with a celery flavor used in flavoring soups, stews, and can be mashed with potatoes.

Crimini Mushrooms, sometimes referred to as baby Portobellos will also be available. Saute them with a little butter, garlic and white or red wine, until all the liquid is absorbed and they start to brown. Top with freshly chopped parsley. Fantastic!

Parsnips, a root vegetable related to the carrot, but when cooked, taste slightly spicy, buttery, and sweet! There are many ways to cook and enjoy parsnips. But if you have never tried them, try this week’s recipe, or simply roast them (sliced in half lenthwise, or cut into chips or chunks).

Have a wonderful weekend! As always, feel free to share your thoughts with us on Facebook and Twitter!
