Produce Report: Cantaloupe!

Hello all and Happy Friday! Strawberries, peaches and melons are a sure sign that summer has arrived. And we are very excited to have a plentiful of summer fruits next week. In particular, we cannot wait for juicy and sweet cantaloupe.

Not only are these melons delicious, they are also packed with nutrients perfect for staying hydrated and full during the warm days. Cantaloupe ranks among the most nutritious foods you can eat. It provides more than 19 vitamins and minerals with minimal calories per serving.

A Little History: The cantaloupe melon may have originated in India, Persia, or Africa. Christopher Columbus introduced cantaloupes into North America. The cantaloupe is thought to be named either for Cantaloup, a village in southern France, or Cantaluppi, a papal summer residence near Rome, Italy.

Just One Way Cantaloupe is So Awesome: Cantaloupe destroys your risk of heart disease. Many different factors are responsible for the medical condition known as heart disease, these include: high blood pressure, homocysteine and high cholesterol levels. The cantaloupe has potassium which helps to regulate your blood pressure. One cup of cantaloupe provides approximately 1/3 of the recommended daily allowance of potassium.

The cantaloupe also contains more than 100% of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C, these tests to lower blood pressure and has been linked to either reduce to risk of heart disease and stroke, and can also help to improve the blood flow in patients with chronic heart failure. The cantaloupe also contains soluble fiber which helps to lower your cholesterol levels, these five but is also heart friendly and is generally recommended to people with diabetes. A single medium-sized cantaloupe can contain up to 6 grams of fiber.

How to Eat It: Many people don’t realize this, but cantaloupe can be used for much more than eating it by itself. Add it to salsa for a sweet and spicy cantaloupe.  Chop with sage, feta cheese and onions for a savory side salad perfect for a BBQ. Make cantaloupe soup for a cool summer meal. Pair it with figs and Kalamata olives for another delicious salad. Throw it in the juicer for a refreshing aqua fresca good anytime, day or night!
