Bringing in the New Year..Organically!

Hello all and Happy (early) New Year!

Next week’s bins are filled with winter goodies once again. Included are Garnet Yams, a great source of energy, composed of complex carbohydrates and soluble fiber!

We’ll also be having Arugula again. One of my favorites, it is peppery, nutty, salad green, but if you find the flavor too strong, just wilt it or add it to a soup. Heat mellows out the flavor. Next week’s grapefruit comes in from Texas. With a  ruby red flesh, the Rio Star Grapefruit is the best of the best!

One of the most versatile and healthy items in the bins is cauliflower. It is also this week’s star of the brassica family. Be sure to check out this week’s featured recipe! It is sure to be a treat!

Speaking of versatile and healthy produce, we wanted to share with you some of our favorite produce for excellent healthy meals to start your new year off right.

Squash is one of the handiest and healthiest vegetables you can serve. It might win the vegetable versatility award, as you can bake or roast it, steam or boil it, use it in stews or a stir-fry. Squash is good in soups, main dishes, as a side dish, and even for dessert, where it can take the place of pumpkin or sweet potato as a pie filling.

Cabbage is a hardy vegetable that is great in many dishes. There are various shades of green available, as well as red or purple types. Head shape varies from the standard round to flattened or pointed. Most varieties have smooth leaves, but the Savoy types have crinkly textured leaves.

Sometimes all you need is the right herb or spice to turn a plain vegetable into a spectacular side dish. And sometimes the best way to season a vegetable is by cooking it with another vegetable, or with fruit or fruit juice. Here are some different ideas for adding great flavour to cooked vegetables. Avocados are a great addition to many dishes, or eaten plain out of the skin. Consider adding chili powder, cumin, grapefruit, lemon, lime, oregano or orange to spice your avocado up.

Try cooking at least three times a week this year to save money and stay healthy. Check out this awesome healthy recipes database!

Have a happy and safe New Year’s everyone! Happy 2012! 🙂
