Produce Report: Sweet June

Hello all and Happy Monday! The first week of June is here and has brought with her the sweet signs of summer! The produce arrived in wonderful condition this week. Both the fruits and veggies are excellent.

What’s our “warehouse favorite” this week? The cantaloup! A sure sign of the new season, this week’s cantaloup tastes like candy! It is full of flavor and has great texture. Add cantaloup to a salad, aqua fresca, or eat it simply as it is.

Find out all the ways you can eat cantaloup in our last produce spotlight!

We also received a beautiful bunch a red grapes. Firm and sweet with just enough tart, these grapes are ready to snack on. Did you know? Grapes consist of about 80% of water, which make them a low-calorie snack or dessert. Raisins or dried grapes consist of about 15% of water.

Fruit weren’t the only treats this week. Our leafy greens also looked very good. One of Carolyn’s favorite types of lettuce, Red Leaf lettuce came in from Oregon this week. If you like butter lettuce, you’ll like this too. It’s more than just good for salads, though. Braise, add to soups at the end of cooking, add to sandwiches, use as a bed for proteins, use as a sandwich wrap – the recipes are endless!

The escarole, too, came in looking beautiful. These heads are full and pretty. Escarole is mildly bitter and adds texture to both cooked and raw dishes. Combine chopped, fresh escarole with sliced peaches and goat cheese, then dress the salad with a vinaigrette.

What is your favorite item this week? We’d like to know your favorite way to eat it! Share your recipes on our Facebook page so that we can share with our foodie friends!
