Fruit-tastic! Insight into this week’s bins…

Happy Monday All!! Today’s produce came in looking beautiful this morning and we are ready to get our deliveries back on track! 🙂

This week’s bins are sure to be a treat! In the midst of colds winter days, we have some delicious citrus fruit that will make you think of warmer days. One nutritious, health-promoting fruit this week is the Rio Star Grapefruit. A bitter citrus, grapefruit is rich in phytonutrients such as vitamin A, beta-carotene, and lycopene. Some people call it a fruit of “paradise” for its unique disease-healing properties, especially among those who are health-conscious and into fitness.

It is also a good source of vitamin-C; it provides about 52% of the daily recommended amount! Vitamin-C is a powerful natural anti-oxidant and helps body develop resistance against infectious agents and scavenge harmful free radicals. It also is required for the maintenance of normal connective tissue as well for wound healing. It also facilitates dietary iron absorption from the intestine. So eat those grapefruits and stay well this cold season!

Along with grapefruit are the juicy and sweet tangelos. A hybrid between a tangerine and a pomelo, a tangelo is more than just fun to say. They are low in calories, easy to peel and full of vitamin-C, making this one of nature’s best candies! Tangelos are also a good source of dietary fiber. And did you know, among other great things, dietary fiber helps in lowering the risk of diabetes and heart diseases?! Good for you, filling and easy to eat at your desk; does it get any better?

Another vitamin-C packed tangerine snack is the gold nugget mandarin. They are low in calories and fat. They are also very common additives in culinary cuisine. Their halves are placed into main dishes, salads and desserts, such as gelatin and pudding. The oil from mandarin oranges is used in tasty treats, providing flavor for candies, gum and ice cream. However, mandarin oranges do more than provide a pleasing taste. This citrus fruit has multiple health benefits, from reducing the risk of cancer to weight loss.

Mandarin oranges can lower your risk of liver cancer, says the RxPG News site. Researchers at Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine found that by drinking mandarin juice, people who have chronic viral hepatitis can reduce their risk of developing liver cancer. In the one-year study, 30 participants who had viral hepatitis consumed a beverage containing mandarin juice daily and showed no signs of liver cancer. This is in contrast to the 8.9 percent rate of liver cancer found among the 45 participants who did not drink the daily beverage, says the site.
